Peas:
Peas are legumes that originated in Asia. In Europe traces have been found dating from the Bronze Age. Peas are popular in Europe, being tasty, easy to grow, inexpensive and a natural source of protein.
There are many varieties of vining pea or ‘garden’ pea, the most common types are wrinkled peas which are used for freezing, canning and fresh market. The other main type are peas with smooth skins usually considered for canning. Other varieties include the sugar snap pea and snow pea, both of which have edible pods (mange-tout). Other types of pea are used for combining, fodder and so on.
Peas and other pulse crops are useful as they require little input in the way of chemicals and fertilizers while they leave nitrogen in the soil which can be used by following crops such as cereals. This also benefits local wildlife.
(Sugar-snap pea, snow pea, sugar pea, edible-podded)
Sugar, or snow, peas are harvested when immature and eaten whole. They have a particularly high sugar content. Snow peas originated in the Netherlands in the 16th Century. They are widely used throughout Asia, some argue that they originated in that area.
In Snow peas the pods are completely flat the seeds inside being immature and small, sugar snaps are fully rounded, and look like garden peas in their pod.
Most of these types of pea have 'string' following the edges of the pods. The string is tougher on less fresh peas, although the amount of string does vary according to variety.
